Meet True North Stories
I’m Louisa Duncan. I write books for people who want their stories remembered properly.
I live in East Lothian with my family. Four children means most days are a mix of noise, interruptions, half-finished cups of tea, and conversations that wander off before they reach a neat ending. That turns out to be good training for this work.
True North Stories started after I realised how easily important moments slip past unrecorded. Not the polished milestones, but the ordinary truths that actually define a life. The way someone tells a story. The details they always include. The bits they never quite say out loud.
I don’t ask people to perform or prepare. We talk. I listen carefully. Then I shape what’s said into something that reads like the person it belongs to, not like a template or a script.
These books are for families, couples, parents, and children who want something they can come back to and recognise.

During the first lockdown, life at home was a whirlwind. I had two primary-aged children to homeschool, a three-year-old toddler running wild, and a six-month-old baby who had just discovered crawling and climbing. In the middle of the chaos, I thought we’d do a little project about family history. The kids wrote questions for their grandparents, ready to record and send out to receive answers that would become part of our story.
But the days blurred with lessons, tantrums, and endless snacks, and I never sent the questions. A few weeks later, my mum passed away suddenly from a heart attack. She never got the chance to answer. That loss, and the regret of her untold stories, has stayed with me ever since.
True North Stories grew from that moment. I realised how easily stories are lost, and how much we rely on them to understand who we are and where we come from. Capturing them matters, not because they’re grand, but because they’re real.
